Discount Grocery is a conceptual work that questions the pervasive nature of consumerism within the everyday. Working within a Marxist framework, Discount Grocery converses with the idea of the commodity. With the removal of the product from the store, the worker thus becomes the commodity, the exploitation of their labour under capitalism becomes the exchange, time itself now affixed with a monetary value.
DG couldn't be more relevant in its themes and environment. With the cost of living in Aotearoa continuing to rise, many families are feeling the strain of increasing supermarket prices (with its desolate shelves, DG does in a way reflect the current state of our supermarkets).
